Cashier

Cashiers are responsible for fostering a warm and welcoming environment while upholding standards of efficiency that enable the Co-op to thrive. They develop knowledge through on-the-job experiences and seek out ways to improve. They work in a variety of different areas on diverse sets of tasks and may be required to learn vast amounts of information.

Pay Range: $16/hr

Time Commitment: 18 - 25 hours per week; 18 hours minimum

Cashiers demonstrate ownership over the Co-op’s Mission and Purpose by performing the following duties in cooperation with fellow Crew Members and management:

REQUIREMENTS:

Customer Service

  • Greeting customers, making eye contact, smiling, and saying hello.

  • Educating themselves about products in order to share their knowledge. Offering suggestions when appropriate.

  • Answering questions and enthusiastically helping customers find items.

  • Maintaining familiarity with Co-op policies, procedures, membership module, promotions, and events calendar.

  • Operating the cash register in a friendly yet efficient manner, being respectful of customers’ time.

  • Maintaining awareness and acknowledging customers in the register area, calling for back-up as needed.

  • Bagging groceries with care and helping customers out to their cars when needed.

  • Promptly getting back to customers who have questions that need follow up.

Store Support

  • Light stocking of shelves and coolers, regularly rotating product, and recording unsellable items.

  • Ringing up customers for their purchases in an efficient manner

  • Giving excellent customer service at the check-out line

  • Maintaining an organized and accurate cash drawer, including membership paperwork.

  • Maintaining the physical appearance and cleanliness of the register and surrounding areas, including (but not limited to): coffee bar, wellness shelves, and beverage coolers.

Teamwork

  • Being friendly, courteous and respectful of fellow Crew Members – having a positive attitude.

  • Working with a sense of urgency within designated time frames.

  • Maintaining high levels of communication, including reading in-store updates, checking email regularly, and being accountable to scheduling guidelines.

  • Discovering ways to improve processes.

  • Arriving to work on time and ready to work at the start of their shift.

  • Understanding the importance of safety while performing all duties.

  • Remaining calm and composed during difficult or stressful situations.

  • Knowing when, how, and who to ask for help.

Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Attending staff and team meetings as required.

  • Completing cleaning duties as assigned.

  • Performing quarterly inventories.

  • Answering phones and directing calls as appropriate.

  • Participating in active or passive demos.

  • Helping cover shifts in the event of illness or injury.

  • Participating in Co-op sponsored events.

  • Creating signs or artwork.

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Physical requirements:

  • Stand or walk for up to 8 hours at a time.

  • Lift 10-15 pounds regularly, to heights of 10-72 inches.

  • Adapt to sudden temperature changes.


Grocery Clerk aka Back of Store Clerk (BC) 

As a Grocery Clerk you are responsible for proper maintenance and upkeep of the Chill, Frozen, Grocery, Bulk and Beer/Wine Departments by receiving, stocking, and merchandising the products sold at the store. You are responsible for the organization, cleanliness and safety of the floor and backstock areas, including the coolers, walk-in refrigerator, freezers, bulk areas, aisle shelves and back warehouse. In order to perform your duties correctly and efficiently, you will be asked to read, memorize, and impart vast amounts of information, including maintain a series of protocols for each area of the store. You will provide friendly and helpful customer service through suggestions and recommendations, product location, and informative dialogue. You will work effectively and cooperatively with your teammates and co-workers in order to maintain high level store operations and further accomplish goals.  

Pay Range: $16/hour  

Time commitment: 18 hours/week (minimum)* 

*The Grocery Clerk must be available to work at least one UNFI delivery day (Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday 8:30am-2pm), one other weekday (Monday – Thursday), and one day of the weekend (Friday – Sunday).  

REQUIREMENTS:

Clerking Responsibilities (Beer and Wine, Bulk, Chill, Frozen, Grocery)  

  • Arrive to all scheduled shifts and meetings on time and ready to work. 

  • Properly receive deliveries of all kinds (e.g. UNFI, Falcon, UPS, beer, perishable packages). 

  • Maintain organization and proper shelf sets, especially in high traffic locations (e.g. coolers, dairy, floor displays). 

  • Evaluate and prioritize the needs of the store in order to efficiently stock shelves and cooler areas. 

  • Maintain organization of backstock areas in such a way that is accessible and safe. 

  • Pull spoils regularly for all perishable and dated products. 

  • Build and maintain weekly floor displays, seasonal displays, and sample tables. 

  • Update price changes correctly and efficiently. 

  • Maintain promotional signage around the store by cutting, hanging and switching out sale signs. 

  • Maintain a clear awareness of sale items, promotions, and events in the store or sponsored by the Co-op. 

  • Assist Grocery Managers with other projects when necessary.  

Customer Service 

  • Gain knowledge of the Co-op business model and benefits of ownership

  • Wear name tag at all times while on shift. 

  • Assist customers with inquiries related to products and special orders in store and over the phone. 

  • Acknowledge customers in an approachable way so that they may feel comfortable asking questions. 

  • Be familiar with what each manager is in charge of, so you may accurately direct a customer in need of assistance. 

  • Know the location of all items in the store and the seasons for produce. 

  • Answer the phone in a courteous and helpful manner. 

  • Understand how to use the intercom system correctly and courteously. 

  • Stay calm and composed in difficult situations. 

General Responsibilities 

  • Understand, memorize, and follow procedures and policies, both store-wide and department-specific. 

  • Read the Communication Board, store binders, and email on a regular basis for updates, schedules, and general correspondence. 

  • Assist cashiers when necessary to reduce the checkout line, check a price, show a customer to an item, or cover breaks. 

  • Attend department and store-wide meetings on time. 

  • Assist in store-wide projects or help other department managers when necessary. 

Qualifications 

Minimum 

  • Able to lift 50 pounds safely on a regular basis. 

  • Able to work in cool temperatures (35-45°F) for several hours at a time. 

  • Able to memorize protocols and procedures regarding spoils, inventory, stocking, and deliveries. 

  • Able to memorize protocols and procedures regarding cash handling, membership, safety and health codes. 

  • Able to work well with a wide variety of personalities and cultures. 

  • Able to adapt to a changing work environment and culture of the store. 

 Preferred 

  • Previous grocery or perishables experience. 

  • Previous customer service experience. 

  • Excellent communication skills. 

  • Spatial and conceptual problem solving skills. 

  • High attention to detail. 

  • Flexible schedule. 

  • Basic computer literacy.

Produce Clerks

The Isla Vista Food Coop strives for the highest quality Produce you'll find in Santa Barbara County, showcasing the best of Central CA’s prized agricultural industry.

What will I do?

  • Create beautiful Produce Tableaus (Displaying, perfecting, and keeping fresh the finest Organic Produce )

  • Organize the back-stock cooler for smooth, efficient operation

  • Maintain good communication with co-workers

  • Receive large deliveries of produce (You should have a strong back and be okay working in a cooler for stretches of time)

  • Occasional deep cleans of the case and displays

  • Taste and learn how to love and care for fresh, fragile Produce

  • Have really good work ethic

  • Help customers find and learn about fresh fruits and veggies

  • Have a great sense of humor and work with a great crew while having fun doing it!


Deli Worker

The Deli Worker is responsible for keeping the Grab & Go cooler stocked with delicious and nutritious foods that accommodate various dietary needs. A Deli Workers is expected to actively engage in learning about various aspects of natural foods, food preparation, and nutrition, allowing them to assist in recipe creation.

A Deli Worker works closely with the Produce Department to showcase healthy, local, organic ingredients in prepared foods made in the Deli. Products we make include sandwiches, wraps, hummus, salads, appetizers, snacks, desserts, and beverages. This position requires working efficiently and creatively in a small space with others while maintaining a positive attitude. We expect Deli Workers to be active participants in the business and grow in their roles at the Co-op. Deli Workers demonstrate ownership over the Co-op’s Mission and Purpose by possessing the abilities, meeting the requirements, and performing the duties that follow.

Starting Wage: $16/hr

Hours: 18 hours/week (minimum)

Availability: weekdays, weekends, mornings, and nights 

Requirements

  • Standing, walking, or sitting up to 8 hours (with legally required breaks therein)

  • Making daily and quarterly inventory adjustments, including submitting Catapult Inventory Worksheets

  • Creating signage and artwork as needed

  • Attending Storewide, Department, and one-on-one Worker meetings

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Availability to work 40 hours per week with flexible availability between 6AM and 11PM Monday-Friday

  • Possession of a Safe Food Handler certificate (may obtain within 30 days of orientation)

  • Ability to memorize and follow protocols, practices, and procedures regarding safe food handling; SB County and CA State health codes; and receiving, stocking, and inventory counts.

  • Ability to work well with a wide variety of personalities and cultures in changing work environments

  • Ability to assess, prioritize, and accomplish multiple tasks

  • Excellent communication, spatial, and conceptual problem-solving skills 

Preferred  

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Customer service experience

  • Grocery store experience

  • Food service and/or culinary experience

  • Supervisory experience
